The imperfect indicative can be translated into these English forms:
He was reading, They used to sing, I sang
(basically an action that was not completed)
To form this tense, simply take the "nous" form of the verb in the present tense(e.g. finissons), and remove the ons (making finiss). Then, after choosing the relevant person (je, tu etc.) add the corresponding ending depending on the person (makes je finissais).
